Why I Started a Women Only Travel Company

Who am I and why did I start a women’s travel company?

My name is Rebeca, and I’ve been working in the travel industry for just over 15 years.

It started on the other side of the planet, at an airline named Avianca, in El Salvador.

Working for an airline is great!

Just as they say, you get free travel..  and yes, I travelled a lot… Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and of course all over South America.

So far, so good… but then the worst possible thing happened: one day, I met an Aussie… and I fell in love with him!

(Funny story: I was traveling with a Canadian at the time and she could see me falling head over heels for this guy, Matthew. She whispered to me: ‘Australians are bad news! Don’t go with one of them!’)

I’m happy I didn’t listen to her because two years later, I got married to Mat, joined by our families for a destination wedding in Spain.

We didn’t start a tour business, but we did the next best thing – we created a business offering website design to tour companies

In the years running that business we met literally hundreds of tour companies all over the world.

One day a light sparked in my mind. I said to Mat… ‘we know hundreds of people in the industry. We have contacts everywhere. Why don’t we put that network to use and start a tour company of our own?’

He was super excited, and then I said to him…

‘It’s going to be for women only!’

And that brings me to the reason I started a women’s tour company.

Because many times I would go to a place and people would say…

  • Is that safe for women?
  • ‘I wish I could go there but my husband doesn’t want to.. and doesn’t want me to go alone..’
  • ‘My travel buddy got married and now doesn’t want to go with me anymore..’

And this is just a taste.

Over time, it just became obvious to me.. that yes, ok, fine there are already women only travel companies. The idea isn’t that unique.

But how many of them travel the Silk Road?

How many of them go to Oman?

Or get off the beaten path in Sri Lanka?

I should also mention that we have taken more than 30 women to Iran….

Destination inspection in Sarajevo, Bosnia.

In many cases, we have been the FIRST women only company in the whole world to offer a certain destination.. because our Patchies are bloody adventurous.

And that’s who Patch Adventures is for: women who want to just experience everything that makes travel so much fun – having beautiful interactions with other cultures, eating way too much yummy food and just… enjoy ourselves without having to worry about anything!

We’ve got too many trips to list out here, so if you’re interested I’d recommend clicking here and seeing our upcoming dates.

This is my best attempt at a professional pic.. !
