5 Good Reasons To Do This Trip!

FA-LAAB-ULOUS CUISINE:
Laotian cuisine might not be as popular as Thai or Vietnamese, and it's head scratching as to why! Let your tastebuds judge for themselves as you eat your way through zingy, savoury local dishes.
SPIRITUALLY STIRRING:
From hidden temples to meditative Wats you’ll make meaningful, spiritual memories as you chant with monks, take part in a Baci ceremony and visit a park with hundreds of Buddhas.
PLEASE DON’T RUSH:
If you’ve been to other SE Asian capitals (ahem, Bangkok) you’ll immediately notice Laos’ ultra laidback vibes; there’s a saying here – PDR, please don’t rush – and Lao locals take it to heart.
MEET THE TRIBES:
Head into Laos’ remote northern interior to visit the Akha and Hmong peoples, ethnic tribes that hold tight to their traditional way of life.
RESORT VIBES:
You might be travelling down dirt roads and across remote rice paddies, but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to skimp on a little luxury – from a mountain top resort to riverfront lodging, the stays are half the fun!

Day 1: Welcome to Vientiane!

Sabaidi and welcome to Laos! The capital city of Vientiane is waiting just outside. Is there anything sweeter than stepping off a plane and knowing all your transportation is taken care of? We’ll take it from here! A driver is waiting in the arrival area, ready to whisk you off to your hotel.

As your car makes its way into the tangle of tuk tuks and scooters you’ll also see remnants of Laos’ French colonial past and catch glimpses of golden stupas in the distance. If you’ve visited other Southeast Asian capitals, you’ll notice that Vientiane is a bit more laidback. Tonight is all about getting to know your fellow Patchies over dishes that are as exotic as the destination. Expect a herby explosion of flavour with plenty of belly laughs for dessert.

Included: Dinner
Accommodation: Mintra Hotel

Day 2: Local Food & Golden Stupas

Rise and shine early, it’s time for you and your Patchie crew to meet Laos through your tastebuds! Head straight out into the sleepy streets to find the market. Dip your toes in the water, sipping traditional Lao coffee and munching on lotus flower cookies, before moving on to more formidable opponents like Khao Piak soup which often includes spicy chillies. Laotian cuisine is all about salty, bitter and sour flavours and you can bet that your tongue will be wowed.

With the sun high in the sky, it’s time to see those gold-trimmed Wats and sparkling stupas the city is so known for! Wat Sisaket, the only temple standing after the Siamese invasion, and Pha That Luang with its shining lotus-shaped spire are no doubt breathtaking, but the humble Wat Si Muang offers a sneak peek at everyday Buddhists who come to pray for everything from pregnancy to new cars. End the day learning about the Secret War, when Laos became the most heavily bombed country in history.

Included: Breakfast & Lunch
Accommodation: Mintra Hotel

Breakout: The Secret War

Often overshadowed by the Vietnam War (2nd Indochina War), Laos’ Secret War was just as devastating and its lasting impacts are still felt around the country today. In a covert operation conducted by the CIA, more than two million bombs were dropped on Laos between 1964 and 1973. Thousands were killed and many more displaced, all in the name of destroying supply lines between Laos and Vietnam.

To this day, you don’t want to go wandering off-trail in the jungles of Laos. Thirty percent of the country is still contaminated with UXO – unexploded ordnance. The government is continually working to remove as many of these bombs as possible, alongside organisations like HALO Trust.

Day 3: Vientiane to Luang Prabang

It’s almost time to catch a train to the northern gem of Luang Prabang, but you have a bit of unfinished business in Vientiane first. Drive to the outskirts of the city to a wacky, wild and wonderful display at Buddha Park. Over 200 sculptures call the park home, all carved by a monk, inspired by Brahman, Buddhist and Hindu motifs. It’s downright eccentric in the best way.

Afterwards, you’ll head to the Lao Disabled Women’s Centre, an NGO founded on helping Laotian women with disabilities. These women are both leaders and students, learning life skills, earning an income and overcoming societal standards. Get ready to hop on Laos’ shiny new trains after lunch. Soon enough you’ll pull into the Pearl of the Mekong – Luang Prabang. Your hotel for the next few nights is an absolute oasis. Think breezy balconies, billowy canopy beds and an open-air restaurant where you’ll tuck in for your first meal in LP.

Included: Breakfast & Dinner
Accommodation: My Dream Boutique Resort

Day 4: Cooking with Mrs Noy

Kick off your first full day in Luang Prabang learning how to cook those Laotian delicacies you’ve been drooling over. Mrs Noy is waiting for you at the local market, ready to take you under her wing. Follow along, collecting fists full of green onions, lemongrass, lime leaf and cilantro before boarding a boat to sail across the Mekong to Mrs Noy’s village. Her family – and the entire town – will be waiting to greet you! Get to work, learning to cook simple, Laotian delicacies in the Noy’s equally humble kitchen.

With bellies full and recipes jotted down for safekeeping, you and your Patchie crew will head back across the river for an afternoon of exploring this UNESCO city, from five-hundred-year-old temples to the former Royal Palace. Phousi Mountain is your last stop of the day. It’s said that those who don’t march up the 328 steps haven’t really seen Luang Prabang. Are you going to let a few staircases stop you? You’ll be rewarded with stunning views – oh and a delicious local dinner back in town.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner
Accommodation: My Dream Boutique Resort

Day 5: UNESCO Revelations & Nong Khiaw

You’re in for a very special treat today! Take the morning to pick Francis Englemann’s brain, a devout lover of Laos and UNESCO consultant. He’ll offer you a behind the scenes look at hidden nooks and crannies of Luang Prabang and its unique history. Head for the Ban Xieng Mouane house first, a beautiful example of local architecture and an aristocratic mansion. You’ll also get to dive into the Buddhist Archives Centre in Wat Khili, a collection of over 35,000 photos.

If you thought Luang Prabang felt like a countryside paradise, wait until you see where you’re headed next! Nong Khiaw is a paradise rural outpost just upriver. Slip into your best laid-back self and soak up those mountain views!

Included: Breakfast & Lunch
Accommodation: Maison de Nong Khiaw Resort

Day 6: Nong Khiaw

Today’s visit to Nong Khiaw is all about getting off the beaten path. It’s only a 30-minute walk to Phathok Cave but as you follow your guide along the trail, you’ll revel in the walk, passing through pockets of lush jungle and past rice paddies. While the views back over the valley from the cave entrance are worth the walk, once you’re inside the true importance of this site will most likely be what intrigues you. Can you imagine what it was like for locals back in the days of the ‘Secret War’ when this cavern in the mountain acted as a natural bomb shelter for locals? .

You’ll descend down into the heart and soul of Laos next, following a path that leads straight through the rice paddies.  Rice – is a vital life source for locals and during your walk, you’ll learn how they grow and harvest it. Laotians aren’t called the “children of sticky rice” for nothing!

It’s Day 6 and you’ve earned yourself a rest this afternoon.  Take a dip in the resort’s pool, lounge about  sipping a wine or simply just drink in those heart-stirring mountain views again!

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner
Accommodation: Maison de Nong Khiaw Resort

Day 7: The Remote Road to Oudomxay

You’re more than halfway into your Laos adventure already and by now you’re probably used to the occasional bowl of sticky rice – Laos’ quintessential comfort food. Getting used to the local breakfasts is all part of the adventure, so dig in once more. Afterwards, you’ll be clambering on your bus, because today you’re venturing even further into Laos’ remote north! Oudomxay is known for its rolling green hills, caves and rice paddies, but maybe most of all, its ethnic tribes. The drive takes about four hours and we won’t lie – it’s a windy and bumpy trip – but as you pass by rice paddies framed by patches of pre-historic jungle and through tiny villages the time will pass by quickly.

You’ll reach the Nam Kat Yorla Pa resort with plenty of time to relax and trust us – you’ll want all the time here you can get! Your new home-away-from-home really embraces the natural environment and you’ll be delightfully hidden away from the modern world without totally roughing it!

Included: Breakfast & Dinner
Accommodation: Nam Kat Yorla Pa

Day 8: The Akha and Hmong Peoples

It might be difficult to pull yourself away from the resort this morning but you’re off on a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet both the Akha and Hmong peoples. The Akha village can only be reached down a 32-kilometre dirt road, but eventually you’ll pull into Aa No in a cloud of dust. Known for their elaborate headdresses, Akha women really put their blood, sweat and tears into creating and maintaining these garments, adding new pieces on a yearly basis. Did you know that the Akha are traditionally Animists?

Walk the village with a local guide who’s busting to share with you what local life is like there.  Traditional skills like blacksmithing and weaving are relied on for day-to-day life here and you’ll be able to watch them first hand.

It will be hard to say goodbye to your new Akha friends this afternoon – it’s only easier because you know you’re off to a mountain-top village next, to meet with the Hmong people. The Hmong lead a subsistence life and are known as the Highlanders of Laos.  If you’re lucky, one of the families will invite you to visit inside their home.

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner
Accommodation: Nam Kat Yorla Pa

Day 9: Trains, Games and Storytelling

Soak up one last breakfast in your jungle-wreathed nirvana before heading off to the station. That’s right – you’re taking the train again today and you won’t be disappointed because it’s another ride that serves us some of Laos’ most stunning views!

You’ve no doubt seen remnants of Laos’ French colonial past as you’ve travelled through the country, from architecture to cuisine, but what about sports? Roll up your sleeves and get ready to learn how to play petanque, a beloved French pastime of the Luang Prabang community that is still popular today.

Round out the day the best way with a glass of wine (or local whiskey if you’d prefer), alongside the mighty Mekong. As the sun dips behind the mountains, casting shadows on the riverbanks, your hosts will begin their storytelling. Travel through time as they weave a path for you through the evolution of Luang Prabang culture. And all while, the dulcet notes from the accompanying Khene, or handmade bamboo mouth organ, hang melodiously in the night air.

The only way to end a night like this is with a contented sigh and a restful night’s sleep.

Included: Breakfast & Dinner
Accommodation: My Dream Boutique Resort

Day 10: The Baci Ceromony

For the first time in ten days, you have nowhere to be until 4:00pm! Rise at dawn for the traditional alms ceremony, or sleep in and stroll the markets. As afternoon rolls around, you’re off to explore more of Luang Prabang’s 33 temples. Sure, you’ve visited quite a few Wats in the last ten days, but today’s spiritual experiences are extra special. Take part in a Baci ceremony, otherwise known as a “calling to the soul”. Typically reserved for special occasions like weddings and births, your journey through Laos is just as good an excuse as any.

As if that experience wasn’t bewitching enough, you’re off to a hidden temple next where you’ll learn the art of chanting and meditation from local monks. If you’ve ever had trouble meditating, the rhythmic chanting is wonderful for calming the mind.

Included: Breakfast & Dinner
Accommodation: My Dream Boutique Resort

Day 11: Vientiane

Can you believe it’s your last morning in Luang Prabang? You’ll have until just before lunch to soak up the riverside scenes and wander into a temple or two. Before you know it, it’s time to leave this well-loved city and head back to Vientiane. It’s another chance to ride on Laos’ brand new trains, cruising through the countryside in style. Isn’t there something just magical about train travel?

Get gussied up for one more night on the town in Laos. This one will really be one to remember. Gather together Patchies, it’s your final dinner of the trip. Relive all those stories – and inside jokes and laughs you shared – with your tight-knit crew of the past eleven days!

Included: Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner
Accommodation: Mintra Hotel

Day 12: Farewell Friends!

Can you believe it’s almost been two weeks traveling through this landlocked slice of Southeast Asia? You’ve no doubt formed some bonds with your Patchie crew along the way, as you do when you share an epic adventure!

Swap info, hugs and maybe a few happy tears at your journey, grab one last bowl of sticky khao niew, and head for the airport. Watch as the glittering stupas of Vientiane disappear into the clouds. Whether you’re headed home or off on part two of your trip, you’ll be day dreaming about this one for years to come.

Included: Breakfast

Good to Know

WHAT ABOUT FOOD?

Laotian cuisine is flavorful, fresh, and diverse, reflecting the country’s geography, culture, and history.

In the countryside, Lao food comprises simple dishes of meat, and salad. Accompanying your meal will be sticky rice, the staple food of Laos, eaten with nearly every meal.

Laotians use a variety of fresh herbs and spices when preparing their food. Because they love adding fresh and dried chilies extensively in sauces, meals can be spicy, but non-spicy options can be arranged.

Due to French colonial influence, the khao jee is a Laotian version of the French baguette. It’s filled with a variety of ingredients, such as meats, pate, herbs, and vegetables.

Beer Lao is the country’s famous beer, and Lao coffee is a popular drink, often served with condensed milk.

This is the most frequently asked question we get!

Nearly everyone is in their 50s and 60s, with some people above and below (but of course, everyone is welcome!)

Most Patchies come alone and are matched with a room-mate. Remember, you don’t need to pay for a single supplement if you come solo. We will place you with a similarly-aged roommate.

The typical Patchie has travelled a LOT, is a well-seasoned adventurer, and is not easily thrown by small things. However, many Patchies tell us that this is their first ever group tour. Many of our guests have avoided tours to this point as they’re not attracted to being herded around in large groups.

Oh, and one last thing:

Patchies are warm, generous, and kind. We knew it would be like this, but we weren’t expecting it to be *quite* like this. We’re so blessed as a business to have the customers we do; we consider ourselves to be some of the luckiest people in the world.

So long as you have a general level of health and fitness, you’ll be fine. However, to enjoy this trip, you’ll need to be able to spend time on your feet and regularly walk for 2-3 hours. Daily activities might include walking on uneven and hilly ground, getting on and off various forms of transportation and occasionally climbing some stairs. You may also encounter over-the-bath showers in some of the accommodations.

You’ll need to be capable of occasionally using a squat toilet. We do our best to accommodate sit-down toilets (all the hotels have them) but when you’re out for the day, and nature calls, sometimes they can’t be avoided.

All activities are optional, meaning that if you don’t feel like it, you can skip it but it will be impossible to enjoy your trip if you’re not able to do a walking tour for a full afternoon. Unfortunately, this tour cannot accommodate people requiring walking aids.

Australians and New Zealanders require tourist visas to enter Laos. Currently – choose between an online application, or visa-on-arrival. We’ll be providing more guidance on visas closer to the trip departure.

Most of our trips have a tip kitty because many cultures have interesting and diverse rules when it comes to tips. We’ve found it to be the easiest way to combat over-tipping, under-tipping or having the tip fall into the wrong hands. Our goal is for guests to relax and know that the complexities of tipping are taken care of, on their behalf.

We’ll be updating this section with the tipping amount and how it’s distributed, soon.

This trip begins and ends in Vientiane, Laos. We ask that you fly into Vientiane Wattay International Airport, as that is where your hotel transfer will be waiting for you. Included in the cost of your trip is also a departure transfer from the trip finish hotel in Vientiane to Wattay airport.

There are several 1 and 2 stop flights available from Australia and New Zealand that transit through other South East Asia countries, like Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam.

Try to arrive before midday on the start day, although earlier would be recommended. If possible, come one day early to settle in. We can organise additional hotel nights for you at cost.

The opportunity to do laundry during your trip is possible and best left for stays that are for more than one night. Your guide will be able to assist with recommendations during your trip.

In the unlikely event of a health or security related incident during a trip, we’ve engaged a local partner to assist. From our experience, there is not one framework that fits all, and every incident is unique and requires a different approach. With all trips, your guides are your day-to-day support. While behind the scenes, there is an active line of communication – between your guide, the on-ground support team, and Australian Ops.
