This Isn't A Holiday. It's A Swahili Heartland Adventure
When our 20-Day Lands of Swahili Adventure first broke out into the wild, it took off faster than a hungry cheetah chasing its dinner. In case you missed out on snapping up a spot on our first and second sold out departures this year, this trip is a pure boots-on-the-ground, face-in-the-wind adventure – and we are obsessed! You’ll be coated in desert dust, grinning like an idiot, sweating through your shirt and loving every second of it. Along the way, you’ll tick off two kick-ass (if you don’t mind us saying so) countries, make a few lifelong mates and see sides of Africa most travellers never even get close to. Buckle up, because as the locals say, ‘T.I.A’… This. Is. Africa!
Here are 7 things we can’t wait for you to experience:

1. The Best Breakfast Of Your Life
There are breakfasts you forget by lunchtime. And then there are breakfasts where you’re halfway through your eggs and realise that’s Mount Kilimanjaro you’re looking at.
At Africa Amini Lodge, you’ll sit down to a proper spread (hot coffee, fresh fruit… the works) with front-row seats to Africa’s highest mountain. As the sun wakes up, Kilimanjaro shifts from misty grey to blazing gold right before your eyes. Good luck keeping your jaw off the table!

2. An Easy Hike With Bragging Rights
Relax – we’re not asking you to summit Kilimanjaro. ( (We’ll leave that honour to our trekkers over at our sister brand Camino Women!) But we are handing you a totally brag-worthy, yet easygoing, hike on Mount Kilimanjaro itself. So technically… you hiked Kili. You see where we’re going with this? 😉
You’ll wander under tangled vines and giant fig trees, breathing in cool mountain air and feeling like you’ve stumbled into your own personal Attenborough documentary, all without the months of training, the altitude sickness or surviving off squashed energy bars. You’re welcome.

3. Throw A Spear With The Maasai
The Maasai are warriors, first and foremost, so it’s only natural that they’ll show you how to throw a spear like a warrior… and you’ll probably launch yours straight into the dirt two metres away. It’s fine though! They’ll pretend not to laugh.
You’ll be staying in traditional earth houses that the tribe built themselves, getting dragged into dance-offs you’ll definitely lose, learning about tribal traditions around the fire, and realising, about three minutes in, that this isn’t a charade put on for the tourists. It’s just daily life – and you’re invited.

4. The Serengeti
The Serengeti doesn’t care about your bucket list. It’s ancient and endless and alive in ways that’ll make you feel tiny (and somehow bigger) all at once. You’ve probably heard it hyped to the heavens, but we promise; it really is worth all of the praise and then some.
One minute you’re rolling across the plains, thinking nothing could possibly top these glorious views… and the next, you’re frozen to the spot as a pride of lions strolls past as if they haven’t even noticed you. Safaris are excellent, but Serengeti safaris are playing in a league of their own.

5. Banana Beer, Anyone?
Out in Mto Wa Mbu Village, the locals have been brewing their own banana beer, called mbege, for centuries. It’s made by mashing up bananas, letting them ferment, and… well, let’s just say it’s an acquired taste. One sip and you’ll either be grinning from ear to ear or pulling a face that’ll haunt the group photo album.
Mbege is just the beginning, though. Ever heard of ugali, or kuku paka? Ever eaten fried termites? No? You’ll have to join us to give them a try!

6. Roughing It… Sometimes
We’re not going to sugarcoat it – this isn’t a luxury holiday. You’re going to get dusty, sweaty, maybe even question your life choices around Day 9 when your hair has officially given up. But (and we really mean this, bear with us,) these less-than-luxurious moments are actually what allow the natural beauty of this part of the world to show off.
Bush camps are basic, but when you find yourself dozing off to the sounds of lions rumbling somewhere (hopefully) far off in the distance, you won’t care that you’re sleeping under canvas. Plus, spending your evenings looking up at the bazillions of stars in the sky, instead of the ceiling of your hotel room, is a no-brainer to us!

7. See What Happens When You Let Your Guard Down
There’s something about Africa that strips the pretence right off you. Somewhere between the long, dusty days and the nights around a campfire, you’ll realise that the people you met two weeks ago are now your people.
Say goodbye to the carefully curated version of yourself you brought from home, and hello to the messy, sunburnt, snort-laughing version of you! The one swapping bad travel stories over beer, inventing stupid inside jokes and sharing half-melted chocolate bars with your new Patch crew day in, day out. Friendships hit differently out here. You’ll see.
If your heart is roaring for an adventure, have a look at the full itinerary here and then maybe do something a little wild… give us a call to book your spot. East Africa is waiting for you!
